Shrinkfilm is by far the most common product we supply and incorporates a huge range of sizes from 250mm wide collation shrinkfilm to 6 metre wide shrink pallet covers for wrapping modular buildings.

Shrinkfilm is extruded using very specific polymers, and when there is a shortage of raw material they are always the hardest to source and therefore subject to the most severe price increases and sometimes a complete lack of product.

Paper-Thin Plastic Film Soaks Up Sun to Create Solar Energy

... Another type of solar cell used to counterbalance the disadvantages associated with mono- and poly-crystalline silicon manufacturing, called a thin film solar cell these are produced by using only a fraction of pure silicon. Thin film solar cells are manufactured by depositing a very thin layer of silicon on a very thin supporting material, such as glass, plastic or metal foil in a process known as chemical vapour deposition.

Because of its strong light absorption a non-crystallised silicon, also known as amorphous silicon, is the semiconductor material most frequently chosen for deposition. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, in comparison with single-crystal silicon amorphous silicon absorbs solar radiation 40 times more efficiently. A thin film only, about 1-micrometer (one one-millionth of a metre) thick, containing amorphous silicon can absorb 90 percent of the usable light energy shining on it. Peak efficiency and significant reduction in the use of semiconductor and thin film materials translate directly into time and money savings for manufacturers.

Disadvantages of traditional hand rolls:

  • Very noisy to use.
  • Sticky on both sides so stretch wrapped pallets stored next to each other will stick to each other. This can be dangerous when unloading from a delivery wagon.
  • Needs to be properly stretched to be effective which is very hard work by hand and a potential health and safety hazard.
  • When stretching the film you are narrowing the width which results in more film having to be used and consequently a higher cost to wrap each pallet and increased waste.

Advantages of Polybags stretch:

  • Low noise
  • Sticky only on the side that needs to stick to the pallet
  • Stretched by machine to 600 metres at the point of manufacture, maximising the yield and making it less hard work to use
  • Supplied on wider rolls to give maximum output and reduce the time taken to wrap each pallet
  • Less roll changes means less waste and less cost per pallet to you
  • Reduces cost
  • Reduces production down time
  • Reduces waste
  • Improves yield
  • Improves performance

Ideal for securing irregular shaped loads. A quick, quiet and clear way of wrapping, stabilising and securing palletised goods. Protects from dust and weather when in storage, and retains it's tension whilst in transit.

  • Cast film is by far the most popular type of stretch wrap in use, and offers superior adhesion.
  • Blown film is recommended for use in low temperature environments, for example deep freeze storage.
  • Security film is an opaque black, which disguises the contents of your packs and so helps prevent theft.

Most plastic used in general packaging today is polythene. To help you specify your polythene requirements we provide you with the following guide to help you understand the various terms and grades available.

Polythene thickness is measured in microns and gauges.

  • Metric - 1 micron (mic) = 0.001mm
  • Imperial - 1 gauge = 0.004mm
  • 1 micron (mic) = 4 gauge (g)

Regranulated Polythene - (also known as Regran, Recycled, Reworked)

Manufactured from re-cycled polythene film, regranulated polythene products are often used in non-critical applications where quality is not a major requirement.

Competitively priced this grade of polythene can be considered the lowest grade of polythene film. Most commonly used in industrial applications such as builder's films, and refuse sacks. Plastic film that is not manufactured from regranulated polythene is sometimes referred to as virgin polythene.

Low Density Polythene Film - (LDPE)

This polythene grade is known for being a general-purpose product. The majority of Polybags stock products such as the Lay Flat tubing are made using LDPE polymers. Polybags can manufacture any film or bag shape using this type of polythene, tailor made for your requirement.

Shrink Polythene Film

Shrink polythene can best be described as heat reactive polythene which when shrunk forms a tight protective barrier around a given object. For example a pallet cover gives protection against the elements, whilst securely holding it's contents during transportation. Shrink polythene is used in both manual and automated applications, with either a heat shrink gun or a shrink tunnel, both of which Polybags Ltd can also supply.

Linear Low Density Polythene Film - (LLDPE)

Similar to Low Density, Linear Low Density polythene offers greater range in its performance characteristics, particularly its superior strength properties. Polybags has over 40 years experience manufacturing this type of polythene.

Heavy Duty Polythene Film

Heavy duty polythene film is approximately 30% stronger than standard LDPEs, and offers superb added strength properties, such as greater tear and puncture resistance. Heavy duty film is a yield increasing durable polythene. When compared to a standard LDPE, Heavy duty plastic film can be reduced in thickness and offer comparable performance to that of a thicker LDPE. This high performance money saving film is a direct alternative to LDPEs, and worth enquiring about.

High Density Polythene Film- (HDPE)

HDPE film has a cloudy appearance and when folded creases easily. With excellent resistance properties and added stiffness HDPE is more suited to automated applications then other polythene films. The most common use for HDPE is found in the reduced thickness supermarket carrier bag.

Co-extruded Poly Film

Multi-layer poly film consisting of different polymer grades, most commonly seen in grow bags or mailing film. (Black inner and white outer) The different performance characteristics of co-extruded polythene are endless and can be tailored specifically to meet your requirements.

Polythene Layflat Tubing & Heat Sealers

Clear polythene layflat tubing on rolls is very useful for cutting to your desired length when you need to wrap long objects for which 'off-the-shelf' polythene bags are not available. For a really professional job we can also supply a heat sealing machine which will enable you to make your own bags and sealed sleeves.

Polythene Layflat Tubing FAQs

Polythene Layflat tubing, or just "layflat", is an endless and seamless tube of polythene in exactly the state in which it comes from the extrusion machine. Looked at simply it is a continuous polythene bag with no bottom!

How can I secure the ends of my layflat?

You can close layflat by all the same methods as any polythene bag. Most people tape the ends, some use a stapler and many heat-seal the ends. You can even tighten cable ties around the ends!

Is layflat tubing watertight?

Yes, whilst it isn't completely airtight it is fully watertight.

Can I freeze layflat wrapped round fish?

Yes - polythene is temperature stable down to domestic deep freeze levels.

Can I use layflat as air-ducting?

Yes - lots of people use layflat as cheap air-ducting; not only that, but wherever you want extra air simply make a hole in the duct! It can also be used to carry air-born products into silos, etc.

What is the diameter of 12" (305mm) layflat?

Our listed layflat dimensions are half the circumference (i.e. twice the width when laid flat). This means that a 305mm wide tube does NOT fit a 305mm dia pipe. The formula required is Circumference divided by Pi (3.142) = Diameter. Or, Diameter X Pi = Circumference. So, to go over a 305mm pipe the layflat circumference would need to be (305 x 3.142) 958mm = 479mm laid flat width. The nearest available size is 508mm (20") - a nice fit with a little to spare.

Can I make my own bags from layflat tubing?

Yes, you'll need a heat sealer with a cutter to make life easy, but if you are packing components of various lengths with a common width layflat is the ideal solution. It saves stocking loads of different bags and none get borrowed for sandwiches.
